We’ve had a flurry of illnesses strike our home lately, with at least two members of the family having an infection of some sort concurrently for the past three weeks. Obviously, all of our immune systems are a bit down around here, so I broke out the big guns this week – a homeopathic cold remedy, given to me by a pediatrician friend years ago.
Ginger, Honey and Turmeric Elixir
1 thumb-sized piece of ginger, grated (wash it, no need to peel!)
1/2 cup honey
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
Put the grated ginger in a measuring cup and add one cup of boiling water. Let the ginger steep for 3 minutes. Once it has steeped, strain the ginger. Take 5 ml of the ginger water, add it to 40 ml of regular drinking water. Add 1/2 cup of honey and 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder. Stir well. Give one teaspoonful every 1 – 2 hours. It will keep in the fridge for a week! The natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the honey, ginger and turmeric can really help to soothe sore throats and coughs.
And for grownups, this is the recipe Jesse and I have been using for hot ginger, honey and lemon. It’s also incredibly soothing on a sore throat!
Hot Ginger, Honey & Lemon
1 Tablespoon grated ginger (washed, not peeled)
1 Tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 Tablespoon honey
Put the shredded ginger in one cup of boiling water. Let steep 3 minutes. Meanwhile, put 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of honey in a mug. Once steeped, strain the ginger water into the mug and stir to dissolve the honey. You can also add a teaspoonful of the elixir above, to get the extra antioxidant benefits of the turmeric!
If your kids are like mine, they’re coming home with colds all the time, especially in the cold season. Of course, you should always check with a physician to be sure your children don’t need antibiotics for a bacterial infection (antibiotics will do nothing for a virus!). But in case it’s just a cold, maybe this remedy will help soothe your little one!
