Even mommies need a break sometimes. This weekend I kissed my girls and my husband goodbye and hit the road for a weekend getaway. My good friend Leonie came along with me, and we went to Olerai House at Lake Naivasha. I can’t find a way to tell you about this place without sounding trite or clichéd. Olerai is paradise. It is spectacular. Magical. Breathtaking. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
Our first day, we just found a quiet spot, read our books, and chatted. The grounds are enormous, and full of huge trees and mature gardens. All of the structures had gorgeous living roofs, and the buildings kind of disappeared into the landscape. All over the garden were little cozy chaise lounges, or sunken sofas with loads of pillows. There were so many private little places you could sit quietly and get some peace. (Exactly what this mama needed!) During the afternoon, giraffes and zebra come up to the grounds to graze on the grass, the trees, and even the living roof of our house! It’s amazing to be surrounded by wild animals that you usually only get to see at a distance.
The food at Olerai is ridiculous. One of the owners is Italian, and she has obviously trained her kitchen staff well. Everything is grown on the property in their organic farm. We had eggplant lasagne for lunch with delicious salads. Spinach soufflé and grilled fish for dinner. And for breakfast we had a smorgasbord that included homemade granola, fresh milk and yoghurt (from the Olerai cows!), scones, and eggs any way we liked them.
After breakfast, we took a nice bush walk with Francis, our host from Samburu. He taught us all about the local flora, pointing out stinging nettles and water hyacinth from when the water levels rose the previous year. He also knew everything there was to know about the animals in the area.
I really needed this weekend away, and feel so relaxed and well-rested. Hubby had a great weekend home with the kids, as well! I can’t wait to go back to Olerai with the whole family (an inevitable result of going someplace amazing without my husband and kids!)…
