Kids’ swimming lessons

Have you taken your child for swimming lessons? We signed both girls up for lessons wile we were in the States this summer, and I am SO glad we did! It was such an incredible experience for them!

Claire was always uneasy about water, even when she was a baby. She loved playing in the ocean and in swimming pools, but it had to be on her own terms. She did NOT like to get her face wet – even a drop of water on her forehead would send her running for a towel to dry her face off. I worried she would never learn to swim, and feared for her safety around water.

Heidi was a different story altogether – she LOVES the water. That girl has no fear, and for once I had to worry about my child actually running straight into the swimming pool with no one there to catch her!

With two very different concerns, we decided to sign the girls up for swimming lessons at a pool near my mom’s house. It was the best decision ever!

In her very first class, Claire actually swam to the bottom of the pool to grab a plastic ring. Yes – my girl who was afraid to get a drop of water on her face actually went underwater to grab a ring, and swam back to the surface! No tears! My mind was blown. Over the 6 weeks that she had class, she learned how to swim across the pool by kicking, how to jump into the pool, how to flip over onto her back and float, and how to find the side of the pool in case she ever fell in. This far exceeded my expectations!

Heidi did great, too. Her baby swim class was all about setting boundaries – which is exactly what Heidi needed. She learned to wait at the edge of the pool until Mommy or Daddy said, “Ready? 1-2-3!” Then she would jump in, and her little arms and legs would start kicking, and we would help her to the surface after 3 seconds. Heidi absolutely loves this! She is such a water baby. She also learned to hold on to the edge of the pool, and use her hands to “walk” herself to the stairs so she can get out safely – another fantastic survival tool in case the worst ever happens.

I’m looking to sign both girls up for weekly lessons now that we’re back in Nairobi. I’ve heard good things about Swim Africa and I’m thinking about enrolling them there. Do your kids take swimming lessons in Nairobi? Where do you go? Do you have an instructor you love? I’d love any advice you have!

PS – Believe it or not, we’re STILL struggling with jet lag, one week later…. 🙁 Wish me strength and a full night of sleep….
