I was talking to my friend Laura this week about Christmas hype, both the good and the bad. On the “good” side, our family loves Christmas music, decorating the tree, counting down the days till Christmas, and even our Elf on the Shelf (which I was not entirely sold on, but the girls LOVE). There is, of course, another side to Christmas, which has a heavy focus on lots and lots of gifts and toys. We’ve decided to ask Santa to bring just one gift and some stocking stuffers for the girls this year, and we will try to focus more on traditions, family, and the festive fun of the season.
Laura also had a great idea, which I’m embarrassed I never thought of myself, to teach her kids about the spirit of giving. She brought her son to a shop, and asked him if he would pick out Christmas gifts for his baby sister and for his father. What a sweet idea! I think Claire is the perfect age for this exercise, and I’m really looking forward to taking her shopping for Heidi and Jesse. I love that she’ll learn that Christmas is about family, and about sharing with others. I can’t wait to see what she picks out… 🙂
As we close in on the final days before Christmas, I’ll be taking a short break from blogging to be with my family and celebrate the season. We’ll be spending Christmas at home with friends and family, and then we’ll be off for a camping trip to ring in the new year. I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday! xx
