Monday was the first day of school, and we were wildly unprepared. WILDLY. UNPREPARED. I egregiously underestimated how hard it would be to start the new school year just two short days after arriving home.
I had visions in my head of getting home Friday night, getting a good night’s sleep (haha!), spending the weekend resting, unpacking, and getting the girls hair done. (A week at the beach and they were both well on their way to dreadlocks.) I forgot to factor in things like food shopping and jet lag. Needless to say, the weekend somehow got away from me.
On the morning of school, I managed to get the kids out of bed and fed at a reasonable hour (my only success). While I did manage to take out the girls
dreadlocks braids over the weekend, I did not manage to get their hair done. I hadn’t finished unpacking, so there were no cute back-to-school outfits to be worn. Heidi had on no pants, a Pokemon t-shirt, and potholders on her feet. The girls piled in the car, but I really wanted to take a first day of school photo. Claire agreed to come back out for a picture, but Heidi was having none of it and instead threw her first tantrum of the day.
Heidi’s second tantrum came when we reached school. It came time for Daddy to say goodbye so he could go to work. An epic scream-fest ensued. I was ready to call it a false start and take her home, when our favorite school teacher descended upon us and worked her miracle. Thanks to her, the first day of school was not a complete disaster.
So to all you mamas out there who had their acts together on the first day of school this week, I salute you! I strive to be more like you next year. Wish me luck. 🙂
