Camping in the spectacular Chyulu Hills

Chyulu Hills

The Chyulu Hills have long been on my list. I was inspired months ago after having read a post by The Kenyan Camper, and this weekend we finally made it! We had always been put off by the long drive, but Heidi’s getting older, and we thought with the extra long Easter weekend, it was a good time to give it a try. Continue reading

The BEST detangling brush

best detangling brush

I was talking to my hairdresser the other day about detangling the girls’ curls, and she recommended this special detangling brush. At first, I told her I don’t really believe in brushes for curly hair. In my experience, they just turn curls into a giant frizzy bush! She insisted, this brush was different. Continue reading

Arts and crafts to keep us busy over school break

Arts and Crafts time

Ahhhh, school break has arrived. At first, I will love the lazy mornings – no need to pack backpacks, or to rush around getting everyone ready, or to dash out the door to get to school on time. What a luxury! But after a day or two of having both kids at home all day, we will all start to go stir crazy, and we will need some special activities to keep us all sane. We’ve always bumped up our arts and crafts activities during the school break, and the kids love it. Continue reading

Me time?

me time

This week was “hair week” in our house – a monthly event of unbraiding, washing, detangling, moisturizing, and protective styling. Heidi doesn’t love having her hair braided, and a few months back Jesse and I realized that things go much smoother if we remove ourselves from the situation. Lynne, the virtuoso who braids the girls’ hair, is supremely patient and chill. She magically gets Heidi’s head of curls braided, even when Heidi is feeling feisty and uncooperative. Conversations with our kids that made us laugh

conversations with our kids

Heidi has been cracking us up lately with all the funny things she says! Claire is definitely getting older, and her funnies seem to be few and far between these days, which makes me kind of sad and nostalgic. Here are some good ones our kids have dropped on us over the past few months… Continue reading

Claire “helping” with the dishes at 18 months

We’ve seen Claire go through a big transition in the last year or so. She has become really into helping out around the house! It started with clearing her own plate after a meal. This was part of her daily routine at school – she would take her own dishes, wash them in basins with warm water, and stack them to dry. So we started asking her to clear her plate at home as well, and she was happy to do so! Continue reading

Happy birthday, Heidi!

Tomorrow my baby is turning three! Heidi is becoming such a big girl, with her long legs, goofy sense of humor, and adventurous spirit. She is full of bravery and spunk, and nothing can hold this girl back! She loves riding her balance bike, reading books, and playing make-believe with her buddy Nia (they do make-believe campsites in the sand pit at school!). Heidi is sweet, funny, and nothing short of amazing! Continue reading

What’s been keeping me so busy…

Keeping busy

It’s been a busy few weeks in the Wambugu household! It seems all the time I usually spend on the blog has been spent elsewhere these days. Here’s a quick update on what’s been keeping me busy (and away from blogging!). Continue reading

Taking action: writing postcards to our senators back home

After the Women’s March on Nairobi, I was so full of energy and positivity. It was an incredible feeling! But the week after the march, and the inauguration, my feed was so full news about Trump’s executive orders, lies about illegal voters, a ban on Muslims, and the suspension of the refugee program, it left me with my head spinning. I didn’t even know where to direct my anger. I need to channel my energy. I want be as active as possible in U.S. political discourse, even from afar. Continue reading
